Forschungsbrauerei, in the Munich suburb of Perlach, strictly translated means "experimental brewery". It's the micro-brewery that could, and is matching and surpassing Munich's industrial brewing giants in quality, but choosing to remain small and undiluted by the effects of mass production. Forschungsbrauerei brews and sells most everything on the premises, including its locally famous Pilsissimus (5.2% alcohol) and St. Jakobus bock (7.5%) beers. (Forschungs has now opened a small outlet pub, across from the Viktualienmarkt near the Marienplatz). During Starbierzeit (strong beer season) festivities (around mid-March) Forschungs lays on a huge party that actually begins a week earlier than the big brewery bashes downtown. This family-run operation is a worthy experiment and worth a visit to find out what the Forschungs Brauerei will brew up next. It gets 4 beers on our scale of suds
