Formerly Concordia Park, Zur Geyerwally changed its name along with new management several years ago. Other than the name, not a lot more has changed, and this beer garden's musical heritage remains. The restaurant and beer garden were originally named after the Concordia men's choir that first cleared its throat and began practicing scales back in 1913. The choir still meets here several times weekly, practicing on most Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. This beer garden almost lost out to the 1972 Summer Olympics when plans were to level the place to make room for athletic facilities. Maybe it was luck or just popular support, but this musical association-supported establishment is half clubhouse and half restaurant and beer garden today. The area is dotted with small private gartenplatz that are the haunts of weekend gardeners doing their best to escape the city for a few hours. Many of Zur Geyerwally's customers in the beer garden are drawn from those who can't stand the thought of another Petunia when there's cold beer to be had. We can all raise a Prosit to the beer flowing outside, the melodies being sung inside, and the fact that while Zur Geyerwally is several blocks away from the imposing Olympic Stadium, at least it is not buried by it. It gets 3 1/2 beers.
