Technically, this beer garden is in another country. But, more to the point it's a short two-hour train ride away. And it's worth it. Augustiner Bräu is just across the German-Austrian border in Salzburg, land of Mozart and of course "Bob's Special Sound of Music Tour." The beer garden is part of a Benedictine monastery founded in 1605 whose worldly brethren began brewing fermented libations in 1621. They specialized then and still do today in brewing a heavily malted Oktoberfest-style beer that is served in distinctive clay-porcelain mugs. The beer is as good as it gets. It's also about the cheapest, because even in euros Augustinerbräu here is still priced well below anything you'll find in Munich. Local Brewmeister Christian Spatzenegger intends to keep it that way and he'll probably tell you so when he makes his afternoon rounds to visit everybody he can in the beer garden. We wouldn't ask you to travel all this way if it wasn't worth the trip. This is a 5-beer experience.
