One of our recommended day trips, Bräustüberl Tegernsee is certainly one of the best beer hall and beer garden combinations in all of Germany. It's just close enough to Munich at a short 1-hour train ride to make it worthy of a slight detour to enjoy a genuine Bavarian beer hall with royal roots. Tegernsee actually predates Munich and was the site of a Benedictine Abby in 746. And where there are monks with time on their hands there is beer as well. The cloistered beer works gave way to a royal takeover in 1803 and thus adopted the complete moniker of: Herzoglich ("Dukish") Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee. The beer hall is usually full and the din of conversation is high. In fact, entertainment is actually forbidden at Tegernsee, since the tradition of uninterrupted conversation still prevails here. The beer is excellent and brewed right next door. The food is filling although the menu is limited to fast food fare. The good news is that low overhead keeps the prices especially within reason. Energetic management led by Peter Hubert, Bräustüberl Tegernsee's innovative wirt, is making sweeping positive changes at the beer hall and garden.
