Kloster Andechs is a living, breathing monastery . . . and brewery. Not surprised? Good, either are we. But what a brewery! The "Sacred Mountain" of Andechs was home to a religious order some 900 years ago and by 1274 the brothers were already brewing up a few libations that were thought to have miraculous powers. Word spread that a woman actually regained her sight after quaffing a few mugs of the potent Andechs beer (there's a reversal of fortunes for sure) and business at the monastic brewery took off. Today there may be a healthy separation of Church and State, but not of cloister and brewery. Both have plenty to offer. This is a day trip, meaning that you'd better plan the most of 12-hours to dedicate to the S-bahn trip out to Herrsching and the local Rauner bus ride to Kloster Andechs. But it's worth every mile to get there. Kloster Andechs gets 4 1/2 beers.
