beer garden

Weihenstephan is the world's oldest active brewery, having opened its gothic portals under the Benedictine Brothers back in 1040. Back then the brothers were busy producing brew. Today, Weihenstephan is a technical university busy producing brewers. The very best Braumeisters in all of Germany and the world matriculate from Weihenstephan. And the science of beer making is no multiple choice exam either. This is a professional product from cap to bottom. The brew produced under the Weihenstephan label ranks right up there with Munich's "Big Six" as one of the best -- and most popular -- beers in Bavaria. The brewery produces 40,000 gallons daily and nobody has ever been seen pouring it down the drain. Somebody must be drinking it. And, by the way, it's one of the cheapest as well, as evidenced by the relatively modest price of a liter Maß in the Bräustüberl beer garden. It's a bit of a ride to Weihenstephan (S-Bahn 1 to Freising, about 30 minutes) and then a walk to the university grounds and the beer garden. There is a bus, though, leaving the S-Bahn station that will now deposit you at the bottom of the hill. Wehenstephan is one of our day trips and gets 3 1/2 beers. Take in the brewery tour if you get a chance.
